The title itself, “The Surplus Girls”, is a nice and eye catching title. However once I saw the cover I instantly lost interest. This is because the cover is not exciting at all, in my opinion. The art is good but simply not eye catching enough. I just thought that the cover was boring and that instantly lowered my expectations of the book.
However, when I actually started reading the extract, I was quite hooked.
The characters felt so real, it was unbelievable. All the characters were well developed, and their speech and mannerisms were different, and this showed that the author put in extra effort to make each character different from the others.
The writing style was beautiful and descriptive. It gave small details throughout the extract, which added to the reader’s enjoyment. I think that the whole book was probably written very well.
But, I do feel like there is no climax or exciting point in this book. The blurb never mentions anything and it doesn’t feel as if the author is actually building up to anything. It’s probably a lovely book nonetheless, but I just feel like there’s not much of an actual plot.
