Post WW1 and WW2 novels are continuously popular, showing the lure of the horror that we still feel these generations on. And the reality is so many people were living in poverty at this time. This story sets up nicely to be a coming of age, changing of life journey for the character, and whilst the backdrop of post war suits many to read, it isn't for me.
