This story is certainly a look back in time,a different world, in the years following the end of the first world war,when so many young men lost their lives.leaving so many devastated wives and sweethearts to face a hard life alone, or to bring up their children alone.These women were given the name Surplus women of which there must have been many,struggling for work which was hard to find and the hours were very long and the pay very little.The story tells of one of these girls left alone but struggles to better herself and lift herself to find a better job,much to the annoyance of family and friends who do not understand or agree with her decision,but things do start to improve for her and she has quite a story, and comes good in the end.A very enjoyable book.
