The Surplus Girls by Polly Heron.
This book is centred around Manchester following the War, and specifically Belinda Layton. Belinda’s fiancé never returned from the War and she is torn between staying “faithful” to his memory and at times overpowering mother in law against moving forward and rebuilding a new future for herself.
I really enjoyed this book, and don’t know why it took me so long to pick it up. I found Belinda relatable and likeable if at times someone who only wanted to please everyone else, but I did like her feistiness particularly with her brothers.
I really enjoyed this heartwarming book, my only negativity is that the story was at times predictable. This didn’t necessarily detract from the story though. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars for me.
