Very intriguing and dark start to a book. You can sense the general theme of inequality and despair right from the beginning. This is period style book, written to highlight the struggles between the world wars. It is engaging and interesting, particularly if war time literature is your interest. Having read The Tattooist of Auschwitz and the Librarian of Auschwitz, this is a similar style book, but about the struggles in cities closer to home.
This will not be an easy read and already has elements of sadness, but is certainly historically engaging. I would strongly recommend this book to older teenagers and adults.
A good read so far and I would certainly like to continue and read the full story.
