Belinda had been engaged to be married , although she was very young . Then the Great War happened and her fiance , Ben was killed . Now Four years later his family are still in deep mourning , but Belinda is sick of wearing black all the time and sick of working in the factory. All her own family cares about are her wages . She dreams of having a better life . Belinda decides to try by joining a secretarial class . Here she finds that even the middle class ladies have problems . Some of them too are "Surplus " girls , the war having left no suitable men to marry .
I absolutely loved this book . Belinda is a loveable character who I really felt for . The plot is exciting and well told and refreshingly different from many other novels based around the First World War . I shall be looking out for any future novels by Polly Heron .
