Firstly, I love this cover. The blues and golds are beautiful and eye-catching, and it draws you in just as effectively as the author's writing style.

From the start, it is clear that this is going to be a story of strong, opinionated characters and courage that shines through the brutality of war.

I applaud Jayne's dedication to her own views, and her resourcefulness in doing what she thinks is right, even when others disapprove. I also appreciate William's sense of honour in going to stand by a man he vaguely knows at the moment of his death. I already want to know more about how Jayne's bid to heal her cousin's son will play out, and how William will respond to her difference in views.

As for the awful death scenes in the first few chapters, they show the raw and honest way the war will be portrayed in this novel, showing humanity at both their best and their worst.

This was a really strong beginning, and I'd like to read more.
