I wasn't sure what I would make of the first impression read as the setup is initially a bit of a coincidental circumstance which. It was a bit too much of a "right time right place" for the characters to meet.
However I and glad I read on as it really draws you in. The scene is set very vividly and disturbingly with the character of Samuel being particularly vile. I am not sure how the two main characters stories will continue, not much of the plot is given away, but it's definitely an intriguing start.
