I really liked that the author started with the note on the historical time period - always useful to know what world the book is going to plunge me in to! I also appreciated the maps for the same reason. I liked the character of Jayne in the opening section - she seems like a likeable and strong heroine that I could get behind, although the time period doesn't immediately appeal to me.
