Whilst this is a perfectly reasonable extract, it wasn't enough to hold my interest for a whole novel. I'm not usually a fan of books in historical settings and this was no exception. The book has to be exceptional for me to be interested in historical fiction but sadly this was not. The front cover was not appealing to me either. The authors note at the beginning was odd to read, it was so dull it misled me to believe the rest of the extract would be this dull. It didn't seem like it was part of the same novel. I would be put off by that page of information alone and would go no further. Which is a shame because the extract starts off a lot more interesting than the authors note. The writing is good and where the story goes seems interesting enough but it wouldn't hold my attention further than this extract. I'm sure that this kind of story will suit someone who enjoys historical fiction in this setting.
