Reading the first look of this book shows the harrowing, harsh nature of life at the time of the 1600s. Who is one's friend? Can one speak openly about one's beliefs? Here we meet Jane Swift and William Harrier two people who meet on the morning of an execution of Catholic priests. She is a doctor, who as a woman is not recognised as a doctor by the male 'quacks'. He is a servant for a lady who has been treated badly by her family.

The description of life and death at this time is accurate though harsh. It is a time of Puritanism, when wearing anything other than plain clothes is decried. Jane is reprimanded for allowing some curls of hair to show from her cap on her head.

I will buy this book as it has sparked my interest in what adventures the two main characters could have against a tyrannical time. Will Jane be able to practice medicine without fear? I'll have to read the book to find out.
