This novel is an interesting look at a period of history and a type of story which is often glossed over. The characters are very well formed and kept me engaged whilst reading.
Jayne Swift is a brave and forward thinking woman, who has a lot of ‘modern’ thoughts and ideas. She is a female doctor and someone who is competent and practical, which often seems to be a surprise to those around her. She is clearly an intelligent and self-possessed character.
This period of history is often overlooked and it is rarely given the attention that it deserves. The love sorry that the author has created shows the depth that can be found in this period, complete with drama, intrigue, romance and sweeping historical importance. I enjoyed taking a deeper look at a very fascinating time in history and seeing the holistic characters created by the author.
