The book sleeve drew me in at first glance and this historical novel did not disappoint. Set in the 1700s and focused on the wars between the King and Parliament, most of the action takes place in Dorset. Jane Swift is the unconventional female heroine who refuses to take sides and offers her medical services to anyone in need. Seeing the futile effects of battle at close hand only deepens her resolve to treat everyone equally. She develops a deep friendship and respect for other strong female characters who are equally unconventional for their time or at least as history would have us believe. Walters' tale weaves a fictional account (interspersed with historical fact) of strong, independent women, staking their place in a world controlled by men.
This is an intriguing read with a satisfying ending, with relatable characters the reader can really get to know as the story progresses.
It's true that behind every great man is an even greater woman! I thoroughly recommend this as an engrossing read for autumn and winter evenings and I learnt more about the specific period in history too.
