Set in Dorset during the English civil war, The Swift and the Harrier follows Jayne Swift, a trained physician, who is determined to remain neutral and help anyone in need of medical attention regardless of where their allegiances lie. Competent, quick-witted and self-sacrificing, Jayne is a classic adventure hero(ine) who is able to transcend the boundaries of society’s gender roles and determine her own path. If this comes a little too easily, not least due to the social upheaval and benign affection of her privileged family, Jayne is a likable protagonist and helpful companion through the battles and brutality and divided loyalties of this period and this place.

Romance comes in the form of William Harrier, mysterious and adaptable and a friend when needed. He flits in and out of Jayne’s life and their narrative weaves through her experiences of the civil war. Themes of loyalty, loss and love run throughout this historical adventure. Great storytelling makes it an easy read and enjoyable escape.
