First of all I have to say that this isn’t my normal genre of book. However, when I do read historical fiction, I end up really enjoying it and it’s the same for this one too. I found myself not wanting to put it down.

At nearly 500 pages, it’s not for the faint hearted, but I did find myself loving it. I really enjoyed the protagonist, Jayne, and found myself instantly attached to her story. She’s a character with clear core values and values that I really appreciate: non judgemental, kindness, equality and respect.

The addition of the historical introductions are helpful for those less historically minded too. I felt like this was quite a modern story in theme but set during the 1600s.

All in all, I enjoyed this book and will continue to keep an eye out for more by this writer. She took me in with her prose and I was desperate to get to the end. It did not disappoint.
