'The Swift and the Harrier' by Minette Walters is the first historical novel by Walters that I have read. I was aware of her other genre novels, so looked forward to reading this book, set during at time of great turmoil and danger.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable read; it's a journey through a turbulent time in English history and I really enjoyed the well-researched historical backdrop. The scenes really came to life for me and I found the story incredibly immersive. There're also some great characters to follow, specifically Jayne Swift and William Harrier (with a complex and mysterious root to his character) who's relationship is a joy to follow, although there are many ups and downs. I really enjoyed the medical side to the story as well. The character of Jayne was the most memorable for me, as an intelligent and independent woman, living in very difficult times. Highly recommended.
