I really enjoyed this book.

We follow Jayne Swift, a female physician, through the English Civil War of the 1640s as she stands neutral amidst the turmoil surrounding her.

Jayne is strong heroine. Within the constraints of the times she shows passion and strong will, making many of the men around her uncomfortable.

The background of the civil war provides ample opportunities for Jayne to flourish and the author sets the scenes beautifully.

Alongside Jayne, William Harrier appears throughout the tale and uncovering the mystery surrounding him was an enjoyable part of the story.

Minette Walters’ writing style makes this a very easy read with a good flow and enough intrigue to not want to put it down. The short historical context at the beginning of each section helps the reader understand the political landscape.

Overall a very enjoyable read.
