Lale has been shipped out to Auschwitz Two - Birkenau from Slovakia. All the Jewish families had to provide one son over the age of 18 to "work for the Germans" and he volunteered to keep his family safe back home. Arriving at Aushwitz he is tatooed, shaven and dressed in a Russian Army uniform before being marched to the new camp at Birkenau. Set to work with 2 Russian Soldiers on roofing one of the many new accommodation blocks being built he starts to watch and listen.

The initial chapters of this book move along at quite a clip and are told in an almost chatty first person narrative. It is a surprisingly upbeat "voice" with some humour, even when witnessing the mass murder of men in a converted bus.

I am not entirely sure how gripping this book will be from those chapters. If I am honest I think that Lale's voice may begin to annoy over time but I hope that I am wrong.
