Distrubing and enthralling in equal measure.
This is the story of Lale who volunteered to work for the Germans as a way of protecting his family but ended up working in Auschwitz.
It is a story not only of his quest for survival but also a documenting of how Auschwitz was built and developed by numerous nationalities and types of prisoner and the hierarchy that existed amongst them. It also documents the first use of Zyklon B gas from the first hand account of Lale.
While it does list some of the horrors committed by one human against another it is also a deeply moving story of friendships made and love found.
It is also wonderfully written and is not a trial to read despite some of the subject matter.
