The cover instantly invigorates the sense of the tale with the familiar iconography of the concentration camps - the blue stripped pjamas, the numbered tattoos and the watch tower.
The initial introduction of the girl and their interaction as he tattoos her arm had me invested straight away, wanting to see how their relationship develops in such a horrific place. I want to know more about who she is, why she's there, and when he will meet her again.
As Lale recounts the smells, the sights, the human emotions around him as well as his own interpretation of what is going on, I felt like I was there with him. His optimism and drive for survival at this point overpowers his despair and I want to know if that can remain as time passes. The author draws on the human senses so well that I couldn't help but be involved and want to keep reading. I was gutted when the extract ended.
