Another beautiful and moving true story like The Red Ribbon which was also based in Auschwitz and published a few weeks earlier than this book.
The Tattooist of Auschwitz tells how two Slovakian Jews met in Auschwitz and fell in love. Lale met Gita when he tattooed her ID number on her wrist. He managed to exchange stolen gems and money for additional food rations and favours which he gave to Gita and other prisoners who were in dire need. Despite all the atrocities and several near death experiences, Gita and Lale, managed to have a beautiful relationship despite all the life threatening danger in the labour camp. They were separated during the last days of the war but eventually re-united. They married and emigrated to Australia where they lived together for over 50 years and produced one loving son.
What an inspirational and romantic story.
