I’m not a massive lover of historical fiction, especially set in the Second World War but after reading the synopsis of this, I couldn’t help but fall in love with this book.

We follow Lale, a Slovakian Jew who is forcibly transported to Auschwitz where he is assigned to be the a camp tattooist. He is tasked to permanently marking his fellow prisoners.

This book is such a heartbreaking journey. I couldn’t imagine being in the situation that the people in those concentration camps found themselves in. I think this book did a fantastic job of fictionalising a real life story and making it accessible to people who would have normally not heard it. It absolutely broke my heart and it will break yours too but I think books like this are so important so we never forget the atrocities that happened.
