Given how heartbreaking the subject material of this book, Morris has managed to make this feel like a surprisingly easy read - she has injected enough hope and warmth into the story to make you want to keep reading, even when things take a tragic turn.

This is the story of Lale, who in 1942 is sent to Auschwitz. When the soldiers discover his ability to speak multiple languages, they assign him the role of tattooist - where he has to tattoo a number on every person who comes through the camp.

Smart, rebellious and kind, Lale somehow manages to not only survive Auschwitz, but to also help others within the camp by smuggling in food to help them survive.

When he falls in love with a young woman he tattoos, Gita, he will do anything to keep the hope alive that they will one day be free and able to marry.

This story does of course have horrific and tragic moments, as you would expect, but you also see some of the absolute best of humanity - and a love story which goes against all the odds. A very emotional but worthwhile read.
