Stories of Auschwitz have always interested me. This book really stood out to me and although heartbreaking this book warmed my heart that love still blossomed in a horrific place.

Lale Sokolov was a well educated man who was ripped from his life and taken to Auschwitz without knowing what was in store for him. This is one of the most upsetting things; the people taken there really had no idea what was waiting for them; they always had hope that they would be freed.

Then Lale got given the job of tattooing all the prisoners that were marked for survival and his real journey in Auschwitz began. That was how he met Gita and his fight for life was not just about him anymore, he was also trying to save the girl he loved.

The story was so moving and despite the pain the characters were going through it still had so many uplifting moments that proves that beauty can still grow in the ugliest of places. The horror of war is so confronting but the stories of the people that suffered through it are inspiring. I am looking forward to reading the follow up book - Cilka's Journey' and continuing to learn more about this important subject.
