This story is about Lale who is a Slovakian Jew who is forced to become a tattooist at Auschwitz. This is a privileged position in the camp; marking his fellow prisoners as they enter the camp. One day Gita catches his eye and it doesn’t take long for them to fall in love. Once free from the camp, will they find each other again and live the life they’ve planned?
It is a heartbreaking and eye opening story of love, hardship, death and determination. It is a book that will stay for me forever. It has been passed around my family who have cried and all recommended it onto other people.
I found the way it wasn’t written easy to read and it was easy to connect with characters and feel the pain. I had never read anything around the holocaust or historical fiction, but this has opened my eyes to such stories and will be interested in reading more in this area.
