I didn’t care for this.

While I cannot deny it’s a fast and easy read, it’s just so poorly written. The language is void of emotion, the writing is stilted, and the whole thing reads like a bulletpoint list instead of a story. Also, it’s told in the present tense which is probably not the best choice for readability.

I found the story rather unbelievable and was shocked to find out it was true. The coincidences in favour of and liberties that the MC took were quite astounding and incongruent with the experiences of so many others. If this was an out-and-out fiction novel, I would say that it totally undermined the horrors of the Holocaust and made light of the experiences of the victims; to use Auschwitz as a backdrop to stage a two-bit romance is patently absurd.

I didn’t feel any connection to the characters whatsoever. The romance was ridiculous and the MC’s Oedipus complex was kind of icky.

I think this book had potential if it had been written by a more experienced writer but because the focus was off and the writing so poor, I can’t really recommend it. I should have trusted my gut with this one and left it on the shelf.
