This is a really remarkable true story, about a remarkable young man, who survived three years in the hellhole of Auschwitz, where he was forced to become the camp tattooist; living off his wits and improving the lot of his fellow prisoners, whilst fighting for survival himself. The fact that he found the love of his life in that dreadful environment is nothing short of amazing, and made the story even more poignant.
I’ve read several books about life in the concentration camps, but this one will certainly live on in my memory. It’s a wonderful book about one man’s fight, in his own quiet way, against really terrible adversity and inhumanity during the worst period of world history ever known. This is definitely one to keep and recommend to others.
