This book became the start of me reading the Auschwitz series of books including Cilka’s Journey and The Librarian of Auschwitz. The love story in this book is what keeps hope above all other, but doesn’t detract from the horrific experiences of the prisoners, and Lale Sokolov, who is ordered to be the tattooist - an uncomfortable role he doesn’t wish for, as he begins to mark all identified with specific numbers (indicative of the soon to become Holocaust). Lale falls in love with one of the ladies he tattoos and from that moment is intrigued by her and wishes get to know her better. He is thwarted on many occasions and puts his life at risk to pursue her but still that doesn’t stop him....
