A perfect balance between the horrors of Auschwitz and the blossoming love between Lale and Gita. Being a true story, it was so much easier to become emotionally invested than with a work of fiction, and this is a perfect story to care about.

I found myself virtually unable to put the book down, even over Christmas, with all its distractions. I began to sympathise with people I would never expect to, such as the SS, because this story highlights how many of them were unaware of what was going on or still tried to be decent people.

Never knowing what happens to many of the people is difficult, however that's life, and part of the intrigue is being left with something to wonder about, which this book does perfectly.

This book is definitely getting a prime location on my bookshelf, and will be read again and again.
