This was not quite what I expected. I started reading expecting a grim story with a pivotal focus on death and the murders committed by the nazis but left feeling more like I had read a love story formed in the most unlikely of circumstances in the most unlikely of places. A true story of overcoming barriers and a mind over matter mentality. I was expecting one of two endings so when one of those was the ending it came as a little surprise however the journey to the ending was unlikely. After reading I carried out some further research to find that the man died in 2006. A glimpse into his life through this story based on his three years in the concentration camp is a way to shift perceptions on reality and learn what it really might have been like in the dark times of Hitler's reign over not only Germany but the majority of Europe. Would recommend this book to anyone interested in a love story formed around a slightly graphic story of the concentration camp which was Auschwitz.
