This book is amazing. I loved it from the first page and got through it in just a few days. I really didn't want to put it down. It is such a sad story but also has such moments of intimacy; it's strange to think that such a beautiful thing could grow in such a dark and desolate place.
The main character is so compelling and it is easy to fall in love with him yourself, as you read through the book.
At points I wanted him to fight more for his human rights but I absolutely understood why he didn't.
It's a shame that there wasn't more of the story at the end, however I guess that wasn't the point of the book.
I imagined the book to be more graphic, only because of my own knowledge of the subject matter, but I think it was a fantastic idea not to portray the horror in so much detail and to focus on the positive, which is what our hero did after all.
Such an emotional read. Makes me glad that I wasn't alive in those times
