This was a gift from my daughter, who said “I thought you might like this one.” And like, I did! As a reader with a soft spot for characters who I can love, detest or empathize with, Morris was able to capture the person and character of Lale in a manner that had you turning the pages quickly in hopes that he would not only survive but be reunited with his Gita. I didn’t want the story to end. It was a heart wrenching but easy read that left me questioning what I would do if I were faced with choosing between survival and morality. There were times when I felt like I wanted or needed more. These gaps are inevitable in the recounting of a traumatic tale through the lense of nearly six decades. This is a wonderful story of enduring love growing out of a horrifically dark period of human history.
