Set in the 40s in war torn Europe, it depicts the life of Lale. He volunteers to be taken from his hometown in exchange for his family's safety. Shipped to Auschwitz he somehow manages to survive, even thrive whilst witnessing the true horror of the camps. Despite the hopelessness of the situation, he manages to cheat death on more than one occasion, help others and fall in love.
Written in a way that compels the reader to read on. Knowing that this horrific story indeed happened can make even the hardest heart ache. I could not put the book down until it was finished. I became absorbed in the story and even dreamt about it. Lale and Gita survived more horror than anyone should ever be exposed to and yet their love for each other forced them to survive. An amazing book detailing an extraordinary life.
