** spoiler alert ** This story is about 2 Slovakian Jews who survived Auschwitz. Lale & Gita meet each other in the worst of circumstances, but with their love for each other and plans for the future they cling to hope that they will both make it out together alive. Lale is given the job of tattooing the camp mates when they arrive on site where, while tattooing Gita he instantly falls for her. Using his high position from his job, he exchanges money and jewels for food for the prisoners, risking his own life. Which gave me even more admiration for Lale that he was putting his own life on the line to help others.

This was one of those novels that I just could not put down. If I'd have the time I think I would have read in a day. It was interesting as it was sort of set out as if it was Lale's personal memoir. This novel is an emotional read, as you can already guess stories like these generally are. But it was also uplifting. Uplifting to see Lale reunited with loved ones. Uplifting to see him helping others. Heather Morris really captures the emotion told from Lale, makes the readers feel as though they are experiencing everything with him.

I do not usually tend to read books like this. But I am so glad I did as even though it was an emotional, horrific journey for millions of people. Lale's story is an uplifting one and really makes you appreciate the loved ones around you.
