This is the story of Lale and Gita, two Jews incarcerated in Auschwitz and how their love blossomed in such an unlikely place. It is of the determination of a person to survive against all the odds, how Lale became the person responsible for tattooing each new arrival with their camp number and how he had to entrust the knowledge of his relationship with Gita to his SS guard in order that messages could be passed between them. At the same time he managed to get food from outside in the hope of easing some of the hunger for inmates, when he is discovered I held my breath, certain it was the end. Their story is related against the horrors of the atrocities of these camps, how anyone survived is a testimony to their spirit.
Until I received the book I was unaware it was a true story. I am in awe of the determination of this couple to survive and find each other afterwards. Should be compulsory reading in order that we don’t forget how evil man can become and how good will triumph.
