This is a very powerful story that needed to be told. It describes the harrowing experiences of Lale Sokolov, who incredibly was responsible for the task of tattooing numbers on prisoners of Auschwitz.

It is clearly not an easy book to read at times, but Lale has a wonderful character and important story to tell. There is also a romance to this story, which is told beautifully - while held prisoner in Auschwitz, Lars falls in love with Gita. The care and selflessness that is shown not only between these two characters, but across many of the prisoners, says so much about humanity and love.

The fact that it is based on a true story makes it all the more striking and significant. The pictures of Lale and Gita at the end of the book were lovely to see. I definitely recommend this book.
