Harrowing time but didn't feel real.

First of all the history behind this book is truly heartbreaking and harrowing. The real life experiences people had to endure were some of the worst tragedies and crimes of our time. However I feel this book glorified those times and didn't really show the true fear and terror of the people in those experiences. Everything in the story telling was almost too simple, too easy and far removed from reality. I don't doubt the two characters did meet each other and experienced an amazing bond which helped them survive and struggle through however the story telling by the author felt lazy and contrived. I also feel the characters weren't portrayed with any depth and it was merely a description of actions rather than the characters. Such a shame that such huge triumph was dealt with in such a bad way.
