Throughout the book I had to keep reminding myself that this is A REAL LIFE STORY! This really happened to someone, millions of people actually and all only 77 years ago..... Horrific.
I found the snippets of Lale's life fascinating and tear jerking at the same time, we join Lale from the beginning all the way through his time at Auschwitz. We feel his losses and his measly wins where he's made the best of a truly awful situation.
The 'epic love story' part was a bit weak in my opinion BUT then again I remind myself that this is true to life and not a beefed up, fabricated version of events. I really appreciated the last few pages where there are a few photo of Lale and Gita. A lovely ending to a hard hitting book.
