I am ashamed to say I don't know a lot about the Holocaust and concentration camps. This heart breaking yet ultimately uplifting novel is set in Auschwitz and is based on a true story. Lale Sokolov is a Slovakian Jew sent to Auschwitz. He was given the job of tattooing those most potent symbols of the Holocaust the numbers on the prisoners arms.
Unbelievably it is also a love story. He falls in love at first sight with Gits as she waits in line. Lale does whatever he has to to survive.
This book moved me to tears at the treatment of the prisoners, disbelief that human beings can treat each other like this and ultimately with hope that the human spirit is strong enough to survive.
This book must be read. All too soon there will be no survivors left to tell their story and it is our duty to make sure it isn't forgotten.
