This is the true story of an Auschwitz survivor. It follows Lale, a young man when the war begins, although the war and his experiences age him far more than they should. This is not a book for the weak hearted. It was not written to sugarcoat the horrors of the concentration camps, we follow Lale as his friends and family are murdered, how he makes new friends and they are taken from him too. We see his extraordinary romance with Cilka blossom, even in the deepest pits of human misery. We see as Cilka is taken from him, and reunited at last.
It follows Cilka's perspective as well, she worked in the 'Canada', and made friends, and we see how her friends fight for each other and watch out for each other in the worst circumstances imaginable.
Heather Morris is an amazing storyteller, the tale flows, there is never a dull moment.
This is not a book of sunshine and hope and happiness, it is a book about sorrow, despair, but shows that even in the darkest times, there will always be a speck of light to cling onto.
