Overall this would get a 3.5 stars from me. The story was wonderful and so extremely heartbreaking it definitely made me cry.

Lale and Gita were likeable and endearing to read about, and this is probably one of the best fiction books surrounding the Holocaust I have read. However, my one issue with the storyline was that although the romance was of course lovely I felt that it had no depth at all. Perhaps it is me being cynical but It felt like Gita and Lale so each other once, barely had any conversations (or in depth ones) and were instantly in love with each other and had a very surface level romance, which inhibited any strong feeling about the way the book unfolded.

Besides that, the fact that this is a true story, based on a man who went to Auschwitz it really was special that his story was told. Although it's maybe not to relevant I did read the author's sequel 'Cilka's Journey' and thought it was substantially better.
