When starting this I didn’t realise that this was going to be based on a true story. The Jewish main character Lale volunteers to go to a camp in order to keep his family safe. This camp turned out to be the horribly infamous Auschwitz Birkenau. This books describes Lale in his role becoming the tattooist, who tattoos the numbers of the prisoners onto their arms. Lale does this not because he wants to, but because he has to and it’s the only way he can survive and help those around him.

Lale falls in love with a woman named Gita who is also at the camp. The story tells of each of their struggles, but also the hope that they have for their future once they leave the camp.

This book was well written and showed the struggle of those who managed survive concentration camps. There are moments were this tale is heartbreaking, but more importantly moments of hope and joy against all odds. I wasn’t expecting to like this but this is one thought provoking read and I look forward to reading the follow up book.
