Everyone knows something about Auschwitz and the Holocaust, but I'd say there are few accounts such as this. It's character driven, personable, heartbreaking yet full of hope in places and tragically matter-of-fact. The development of the relationships within it is sensitively and beautifully handled at all times.

I visited Auschwitz shortly after reading this and was overwhelmed by how much insight the book gives, I could really feel myself making connections to the book as I looked around, which I feel demonstrates how well written and evocative it is. You just can't help but be inspired by the story and value the strength of the human spirit, at the same time as being so disappointed and disgusted at how the human race somehow manages to treat each other.

It's the type of book that everyone should read. Make sure you're stocked up on tissues...
