This was a mighty quick read for me. It follows the real-life story of Lale Sokolov who, due to his understanding of many languages, becomes the tattooist of Auschwitz. He earns himself a place slightly higher up the ladder than the other workers and in that position meets Gita who needs her tattoo redone, and that meeting turns into love.

This is a story about love in troubled times. Lale had a lot of courage and risked a lot for others even if it dampened his own hopes of survival. He befriends people not of his own heritage and cares a lot for all of them. He sees death every day and has to live with that but still he remains strong and his love for Gita is greatly expressed. Even when separated he goes in search of her.

It was a heartfelt read and I found it interesting to learn about Lale and all that he went through. Thanks to Readers First for provoking me with a copy of this.
