I loved this book from the start, from learning who Lale was and following his journey and then getting to know each of the characters he meets in turn. It’s an eye opening story detailing the horror of the concentration camps along side the strength, love and warmth his character shows when he meets a lady he wants to spend his life with. The everyday battles they went through to try and survive, all the time thinking of the life they could have. It tells tales of how each contact Lale befriends has a way of helping him on his journey through trading food, jewels, knowledge. Some of them saving his life in turn for him having saved theirs. The story goes beyond to them escaping the concentration camps and going their own ways and you wonder there will be a happy ending for Lale and the lady he tattooed so long ago, there are a few more trials before you find out of course. Fantastic book, one of the best I’ve read.
