The Tattooist of Auschwitz is based on the true story of holocaust survivor Lale Sokolov. We follow him as he is taken to a concentration camp where he is given the role of ‘Tätowierer’, where he has to carve numbers into the flesh of his fellow prisoners. Thus begins a harrowing and heartbreaking tale of love, loss and pain.

I was enthralled by Lale’s tragic story throughout and was definitely rooting for the romance. The thing that was lacking for me personally in this was descriptive prose. It felt very dialogue heavy and I was missing that aspect of character development as well as exposition, although I do understand that describing this in depth could be very distressing. I do think however that with that element, the story would have had so much more depth and it would have really become an immersive experience. Despite that I do definitely recommend this book.
