This is the kind of book that everyone needs to read. Everyone needs to know Lale and Grita’s story, for it is a beautiful shining light in a time of great darkness. The hope and the strength that they, and their fellow prisoners, show on a daily basis is incredible.
This is the kind of book that I feel like I need to tell everyone, because I feel like I owe it to Lale and Grita to tell everyone their story, to have it live on.
Lale is the tattooist at Auschwitz, tattooing the new prisoners with their identification numbers. When he tattoos Grita, he’s smitten with her beautiful, shy smile in such an ugly place. They pass occasional notes, and meet up every Sunday. Their growing love is beautiful and pure.
While this is a story about an outstanding love, it is also about the bravery shown by everyday people. It is about kindnesses, small and simple acts that have a great meaning to people in need of them. Extra food here, shelter and transport there.
This is a story that won’t leave you in a hurry. It’s a story to share, to carry around in your heart. It’s incredible.
