Lale and Gita’s story is incredible. Therefore, I thought reading it was going to be very emotional and moving. But sadly it missed the mark for me. I don’t think the author did a great job creating atmosphere and conveying emotion. When I found out that she usually writes screenplays and this book was originally meant to be a film it kind of made sense. I think there could have been a lot more detail, the way it’s written is very much like ‘this happens, then this happens, then this happens’ I finished this book in a day because the language is so simple. I really thought I was going to love this book I had a box of tissues at the ready and expected to be sobbing into the pages. However, if I hadn’t kept reminding myself that this was a true story and millions of people suffered unimaginable horrors during this dark period in history, I probably wouldn’t have felt anything at all.
