This beautiful story is revealed through the perspective of Lale Sokolov who is a prisoner of Auschwitz (a concentration camp during World War Two). It starts with his journey of being transported on a livestock train with others before arriving at Auschwitz and becoming a prisoner there. Then, the story continues by describing his awful life at camp and how he becomes the tatooist there. Following this, he meets a woman called Cecilia and the next part of the story tells of their impossible love. The characters are developed brilliantly and the journeys into the insights of their past and experiences is an emotional one that will tug at your heart. Not only this but the descriptions of life at Auschwitz are extremely well done and describe the horror of living there brutally. This book truly helps you to understand the awfulness of the treatment of Jews and others at the time it is set.
