My family on my mother’s side are Jewish, I have family members who died in Auschwitz and I never got to meet. As a result of this heritage, I find myself very drawn to accessing any information that I can about the Holocaust and about Auschwitz in particular. This book did fulfil a desire in me to understand and deeply empathise what horrors my ancestor’s daily lives entailed whilst imprisoned in the camp, however I found that as Lale was treated better than many of the other inmates, I didn’t quite have that access to information that I desired.

The love story of two people who found each other in such a terrible, horrific, harrowing place moved me deeply. However, I think that I would have preferred to read this in a way that felt more factual, rather than being told like a story. Due to this, some aspects of the story really lose the emotion that you should feel as the reader.
